Italy's 2025 electricity output sees rise in gas and solar generation
A 2025 report from the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security shows that Italy's electricity demand remained stable, matching the previous year. The bulk of generation continued to come from traditional thermal plants, but natural‑gas‑fired output rose compared with 2024. Photovoltaic production also increased, driven by newly installed capacity and greater solar feed‑in to the grid. In contrast, hydroelectric generation fell back toward earlier‑year levels after a strong 2024 performance. Overall, renewable sources still supplied a sizable share of national electricity, underscoring their central role in the energy transition.
Investments in 2025 amounted to roughly €7 billion for new renewable power plants, while spending on the thermal sector stayed steady at about €3 billion.
