Italy's Airport Passengers Expected to Double by 2045 Amid Infrastructure Upgrades

Marco Troncone, chief executive of the airport operator ADR, said the sector forecasts a 3% annual increase in passenger numbers, which would raise Italy's total from about 53 million this year to roughly 100 million by 2045. He said the growth will require a sustainable expansion of airport facilities, including an intensive terminal development inside the Rome‑Fiumicino perimeter and a redesign of the runway system to improve capacity and reduce noise impact.

The Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport reported a record‑high passenger flow for the first half of 2026, confirming the airport’s rising strategic role in international traffic. To cope with the surge, customs and finance authorities have intensified joint controls, seizing over €800 000 in illicit cash movements and recording dozens of violations related to currency declaration and other financial offences.
