Italy’s car fleet ages to 12.5 years, driving up insurance costs

The average age of vehicles on Italian roads has risen to 12 years and six months, according to a study of more than 12 million insurance quotes. Premiums for third‑party liability insurance increase sharply with vehicle age – a car ten years old costs about €461, while a fourteen‑year‑old vehicle requires roughly €575, a 25 % rise over four years.

Older cars also face reduced availability of ancillary cover, with insurers less willing to provide vandalism, natural‑disaster, theft or fire protection as the vehicle’s market value declines. Demand for roadside assistance has surged, covering 56 % of policies in April 2026, up from 39 % just two years earlier.

Regional differences are pronounced: Calabria and Sicily have the oldest fleets, averaging 14 years 4 months, while Tuscany records the youngest at 11 years 5 months. Other regions such as Lombardy, Lazio, Emilia‑Romagna and Veneto sit close to the national average.
