Italy's Court of Cassation orders new appeal in Nexhat Rama murder case

Italy's Court of Cassation has ordered a new appeal process regarding the murder of Nexhat Rama, a 40-year-old man of Albanian origin from Kosovo. The ruling partially annuls a previous decision that had reduced the sentence of Italian mechanic Cristiano Mossali from 27 to 14 years.

The incident occurred in August 2022 in Cologne, Brescia province. Investigators determined that Rama visited Mossali's service station to request the repayment of a 30,000 euro debt. Prosecutors allege Mossali shot Rama in the head and subsequently used a vehicle to transport the body, which was later found burned in a rural area in an attempt to conceal the crime.

While the Court of Cassation rejected the defense's appeal regarding Mossali's criminal responsibility, it accepted the prosecution's appeal concerning the nature of the crime. The new trial will take place at the Court of Appeal in Venice, focusing specifically on whether the murder was premeditated. If the court determines the crime was premeditated, Mossali faces a significantly harsher sentence than the 14 years previously imposed.
