Partito Democratico shifts stance on Italian antisemitism bill

The Italian Democratic Party (PD) has undergone a significant policy shift regarding the proposed antisemitism bill (DDL 1004), which is scheduled for discussion in the Chamber of Deputies on October 2. While the party previously opted for abstention in the Senate, Secretary Elly Schlein has now issued an ultimatum: the PD will vote against the bill unless the controversial definition of antisemitism provided by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) is removed or replaced with the Jerusalem Declaration.

This decision has caused deep internal divisions. A reformist minority within the PD, including figures such as Piero Fassino and Lorenzo Guerini, has criticized the move as an error, fearing it aligns the party too closely with the Five Star Movement and could signal a broader shift in stance on other geopolitical issues, such as support for Ukraine. Conversely, the party leadership argues that the IHRA definition is too vague and risks criminalizing legitimate political criticism of the Israeli government.

The parliamentary majority has indicated it has no intention of modifying the text already approved by the Senate. Meanwhile, organizations like the Union of Young Jews of Italy (UGEI) are campaigning for the bill's approval, citing a 400% increase in antisemitic incidents in Italy between 2022 and 2025.
