Italy’s Demografica conference spotlights aging population and low birth rates

On 18 June, the annual Demografica forum organized by Adnkronos gathered government ministers, parliamentary leaders, labour officials and experts in Rome to discuss Italy’s demographic shift. Participants examined the consequences of falling birth rates, increasing longevity and the resulting pressures on the labour market, pension system and welfare services. Three panels addressed longevity and health costs, fertility and maternal age, and the re‑design of welfare to support a multigenerational society. Speakers included Minister for Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella, Vice‑Minister for Labour Maria Teresa Bellucci, INPS president Gabriele Fava and senior senators.

The conference highlighted the need for policies that promote active ageing, support families, and adapt public and private services to an older, less‑fertile population, aiming to inform future legislative and social‑economic strategies.
