Italy's egg industry reaches 3.7 billion euro valuation
The Italian egg industry has become a strategic pillar of the national agri-food sector, with production reaching 12.5 billion eggs annually. This output, averaging over 34 million eggs per day, represents a total market value of approximately 3.73 billion euros.
During a recent industry meeting in Bologna, stakeholders discussed the evolution of the supply chain, focusing on challenges such as competitiveness, animal welfare, biosecurity, and sustainability. Key technological advancements under discussion include precision nutrition, biotechnology, and in-ovo sexing to improve animal welfare, though these require significant investment for large-scale implementation.
Industry leaders emphasized the need for updated regulatory frameworks and reciprocity regarding imports from third countries to protect domestic competitiveness. Additionally, recent scientific findings have shifted the nutritional perception of eggs, noting that moderate consumption is safe for healthy individuals and highlighting the high density of proteins, vitamins, and minerals found in both the white and yolk.
