Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato to appoint new CEO from within, says Transport Minister Salvini

At the ExpoAid 2026 event in Rimini, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced that the next chief executive of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) will be chosen internally, with a railway manager who has long experience in the sector. He mentioned the current Trenitalia CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio as a possible candidate but emphasized that other qualified directors exist. The departure of incumbent CEO Stefano Donnarumma, Salvini said, is not linked to service performance. Salvini also highlighted a 7 % rise in punctuality since June of the previous year despite hot weather and construction works, claiming Italian railways now have the highest efficiency rate in Europe. He noted the end of the more complex PNRR phase this summer and the start of a second phase aimed at further modernising the network, stressing that no political or partisan appointments will be made.
