Italy's Gadda Law recovers 10 billion euros in food and medicine
Ten years after the implementation of the Gadda Law (Law 166/2016) in Italy, research presented to the Chamber of Deputies reveals significant reductions in waste. According to data from Fondazione Valore and Fondazione Terzjus, the industry and food distribution sectors have recovered 3.7 million tons of products, valued at nearly 10 billion euros.
In the pharmaceutical sector, 40 million packages of medicine have been recovered, representing a value of 423 million euros. Donations have increased by 95% since 2016. The law focuses on simplification and incentives rather than sanctions, fostering a network between businesses and the third sector.
The Italian Red Cross remains a key player in addressing food poverty. In 2025 alone, the organization reached over 145,000 people through targeted support. More than 130 local committees across Italy work daily to recover surplus or near-expiry products for those in need.
