Italy's health report flags widespread snack and energy‑drink consumption

An instant report by Coldiretti and Censis, presented on 12 July 2026 during the launch of the national “Campagna Amica per la Salute”, finds that 45 % of Italians eat salty snacks at least once a week, while the figure rises to 61 % among young people. Consumption of other ultra‑processed foods is also high: 34 % eat sweets and candies weekly, 31 % purchase pastries, 20 % use protein bars and 16 % drink energy drinks. The survey shows 97 % consider a healthy diet essential to prevent diabetes, heart disease and obesity, and 88 % want clear information on food origins and ingredients.

Parents voice concern, with 58 % saying their children abandon balanced eating as soon as they can choose independently. Yet many still perceive certain products as beneficial: 27 % believe protein bars and energy drinks aid fitness, a view held by 35 % of youths. Willingness to change is strong—75 % would give up protein bars and energy drinks, over 70 % would eliminate sweets, pastries and candies, and 63 % would cut salty snacks. The campaign, supported by Coldiretti, Campagna Amica and the Fondazione Aletheia, places fresh, locally sourced Mediterranean produce in more than 70 hospitals across Italy to promote preventive nutrition.
