Italy's Historic Sites Host Summer Theatre Revivals

At the Portigliola Archaeological Park in Calabria, the collective VANPORTIGLIOLA presented “Agamenno‑Man – Il ritorno del re” on 4 August. The production offers an ironic, pop‑music‑infused reinterpretation of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, staged in the Palatium Quote San Francesco within the ancient setting. VANPORTIGLIOLA, formed in 2021, focuses on modernizing classic Greek drama, having previously staged “Odisseo Superstar”.

The following evening, 5 August, the Teatro Greco di Akrai in Sicily hosted “Il sindaco pescatore”. Actor Ettore Bassi starred in the play that dramatizes the life and legacy of Angelo Vassallo, the mayor of Pollica murdered in 2010 and remembered for his commitment to legality, environmental protection and civic engagement. Written by Dario Vassallo and Edoardo Erba and directed by Enrico Maria Lamanna, the free performance invited audiences to reflect on public ethics and community responsibility. Both events are part of the summer cultural programme that uses historic archaeological venues to blend heritage with contemporary theatre.
