Italy's historical legends from witch trials to haunted castles
Italy hosts historical sites steeped in legend and folklore, ranging from ancient witch trials to local ghost stories. One Italian village, known as the ‘Salem of Europe,’ earned its reputation during the 16th and 17th centuries. The location became a major center for trials involving alleged satanic cults and occult practices, where collective psychosis led to dramatic accusations and legal proceedings against those suspected of forbidden rites.
In the Emilia-Romagna region, the Castle of Rivalta near Piacenza maintains its own local legends. The historic residence, inhabited by the Zanardi Landi family since the 14th century, is associated with various paranormal tales. These include stories of a 18th-century cook and an ancestor involved in a 14th-century inheritance dispute, both of whom are said to haunt the castle's many rooms.
