Italian gastronomy highlights: traveler preferences, gourmet events and home‑dining trend

A survey by TheFork found that 92% of Italian travellers consider good food essential to a successful holiday, with 75% choosing restaurants that serve local specialties. Spending plans remain steady, as most respondents expect to keep their restaurant budgets at last year’s level.

An article on the history of the restaurant menu explains that the modern printed menu emerged in the early 19th century, driven by Russian prince Alexander Boris Kourakin’s introduction of the “service à la russe”, which replaced the earlier practice of serving all dishes simultaneously.

On 4 August, the Michelin‑starred restaurant Contrada at Castel Monastero in the Chianti region hosted a four‑hand dinner prepared by chefs Davide Canella and Heros De Agostinis, presenting collaborative dishes that blended Tuscan tradition with international influences.

The coastal town of Pineto held the charity evening “Sapori sotto la Torre” on 29 July at Torre Cerrano, showcasing local products and raising funds for social causes while promoting the area’s cultural and environmental heritage.

In Pietralunga, the “A tartufi con Giuliano” initiative invited around fifty participants to a truffle‑foraging walk, followed by a gourmet lunch crafted by chefs Mattia Trabetti and Luca Meoni. Proceeds supported the Lerchi animal shelter in Città di Castello.

The home‑restaurant concept continues to grow, with diners invited to private homes for intimate meals that combine personal stories, regional recipes and new social connections.

Separately, the restaurant Umberto a Mare on Ischia was awarded a Michelin star, reinforcing its reputation as a leading venue for high‑quality Italian cuisine.
