Italy's hunting law reform sparks opposition from environmental groups

Italy's parliament is reviewing a draft amendment to Law 157/1992 that would redefine hunters as "bioregulators" of wildlife. Environmental organisations including LIPU, LegaAmbiente, WWF, ENPA, LAC, OIPA and CISO testified that the proposal lacks scientific support and could harm both agriculture and fauna, urging a pause and a rewrite based on scientific evidence.

Greenpeace also criticised the bill, claiming it would extend hunting to new areas such as beaches and forests, diminish the role of independent wildlife assessments by the ISPRA, and expose Italy to EU fines. The group warned that the reform could undermine biodiversity protection while portraying hunters as primary funders of wildlife management.
