Italy industrial production falls 1% in June 2026

Italy's economy in 2026 is characterized by significant regional disparities and mixed industrial performance. According to Istat, industrial production fell by 1% in June 2026 compared to May, and decreased by 0.6% year-on-year. While the energy sector showed growth, other sectors such as consumer goods, intermediate goods, and capital goods experienced declines. Specifically, production in textiles, clothing, and leather fell by 7.1% in the second quarter of 2026.

Despite these industrial setbacks, the overall GDP for the second quarter of 2026 showed a modest growth of 0.4% compared to the first quarter. National GDP growth for the year is estimated at 0.9%, though this masks deep territorial divides. Regions like Trentino-Alto Adige and Lazio are expected to lead with growth exceeding 1.2%, while Valle d'Aosta and Calabria face stagnation or contraction.

Inflationary trends also vary by location. While national inflation slowed to 2.8% in July 2026, driven by lower food and non-regulated energy prices, certain cities face much higher pressures. Reggio Calabria reported the highest inflation at 4.3%, significantly higher than the national average and other major cities like Naples and Rome.
