Italy's INGV and GARR Launch High‑Speed Network for Geophysical Data

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and the research network consortium GARR have begun a project to create a national high‑speed data infrastructure. The plan integrates data‑processing centres, scientific archives and monitoring networks into a single architecture and links them with supercomputing, artificial‑intelligence and big‑data resources at the DAMA Tecnopolo in Bologna.

The network builds on the upgraded GARR‑T backbone, expanded by the PNRR ICSC and TeRABIT projects to provide 100 Gbps fiber capacity in Southern Italy, Abruzzo and Sardinia. An Autonomous System (AS200375) has been established for INGV to route its own traffic, increasing operational resilience through redundant links. The first upgrade raised the Rome site connection to 10 Gbps, with a second diversified fiber line to be added and replicated across other sites.

INGV President Fabio Florindo said the telematic network is a core scientific instrument that connects Earth observation, databases, distributed CEDs and computing power. GARR President Maurizio Tira added that the research network creates value by linking data‑producing locations, archives and processing facilities.
