Italy's judiciary sees improved efficiency amid calls for political respect

Giuseppe Tango, the new president of the National Association of Magistrates (ANM), has called for increased dialogue and respect between the political sphere and the judiciary. Speaking at the Open Festival, Tango urged politicians to address structural issues through legislative changes rather than attacking the legitimacy of magistrates. He specifically noted that if politicians are dissatisfied with judicial decisions regarding criminal custody or sentencing, they should use their power to change the laws.

Concurrently, data indicates improvements in the efficiency of the Italian judicial system. Driven by requirements to access European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility (PNRR) funds, Italy has successfully reduced the duration of legal proceedings. According to Ministry of Justice figures, the estimated disposition time in criminal cases has decreased by 38.8% compared to 2019 levels, while civil proceedings have seen a reduction of over 50%. These improvements are attributed to the efforts of judicial staff and the integration of personnel hired through PNRR funding.
