Cascading Carigiola Gorge: Tuscany’s Hidden Waterfall Destination

The Cascate del torrente Carigiola cascade lies in the heart of the Tuscan Apennines, within the Alto Carigiola and Monte delle Scalette Local Protected Natural Area in the Val di Bisenzio. An eight‑kilometre loop trail starts near the Tabernacolo della Tavoletta, just above the village of Cavarzano, and descends toward the Molino di Genesio before reaching the site known as La Centrale, where an early‑20th‑century hydro‑electric plant once supplied electricity to mountain villages. The watercourse has cut a series of waterfalls, small jumps and crystal‑clear pools, forming “marmitte giganti” and cavernous rock formations unique to the region. The area attracts hikers, families and outdoor enthusiasts, especially in summer when the lush forested landscape and cool, clear waters provide a refreshing retreat from the heat.
