Italian LNG market projected to grow 11% in 2025

The Italian liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is forecast to reach about 231,000 tonnes in 2025, an increase of roughly 11 % over 2024. Growth is strongest in the industrial sector and in maritime bunkering, while road‑transport demand remains broadly stable with only modest growth.

Industry leaders call for policy support to sustain the trend. Matteo Cimenti, president of Assogasliquidi, highlighted the rise in industrial use and the “excellent prospects” for the naval segment. Costantino Amadei, head of the association’s LNG group, urged the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to extend incentive schemes for truck fleets and to broaden tax‑credit eligibility to include LNG/Bio‑LNG. He also stressed the need to simplify bunker‑age procedures, standardise authorisations and make Italian ports more attractive.

Amadei added that a stable regulatory framework for Bio‑LNG is essential, recommending higher certification incentives and alignment with EU models such as Germany’s THG system. The report, compiled by BIP for Assogasliquidi‑Federchimica, notes that the maritime sector could almost double total market volume by 2028, reaching above 450,000 tonnes if current growth continues.
