Italy's logistics sector undergoes digital and urban transformation
The Italian logistics sector is experiencing significant shifts driven by automation and changing urban delivery demands. In warehouse management, investments are moving toward robotics, including autonomous mobile robots, automated vertical warehouses, and advanced management software. This transition is fueled by labor shortages for repetitive tasks, the increasing complexity of managing diverse stock keeping units (SKUs), and the rapid growth of e-commerce, which requires higher precision and faster delivery times.
Simultaneously, the ‘last mile’ of urban logistics is facing new pressures. While the number of express transport and courier companies in Italy has grown by 31.7% since 2017, the sector must navigate congested city centers, varying municipal regulations, and an aging commercial vehicle fleet. A new report titled ‘Mercincittà’ will be presented at the Ecomondo event in Rimini to analyze how these urban delivery flows impact city traffic and infrastructure.
