Italy launches new medical school access pathways
Italian universities have launched the 'Semestre aperto' (Open Semester), a new access pathway for degree courses in Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine. Under a decree signed by Minister Anna Maria Bernini, students participate in didactic activities in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to qualify for enrollment. The academic cycle includes exam sessions in December and January.
Various institutions are implementing different admission models. UniCamillus is conducting online entrance tests for 520 spots in Medicine and Dentistry, with options in both Italian and English. Meanwhile, the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the University of Insubria have also commenced their respective semester programs. In Benevento, local officials celebrated the successful launch of the medical faculty's filter semester, noting its economic and social benefits for the city.
For students pursuing Medicine in English at state universities, a separate national entrance exam is scheduled for September 29, 2026, following a different selection mechanism than the Italian-language courses.
