G7 summit in Evian restores Italy‑US ties and reaffirms Western unity on Ukraine

At the mid‑June G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump held a brief “clarification” meeting that was described by Italian diplomatic sources as a useful exchange. The two leaders emphasized that the relationship between Rome and Washington remains “unchanged” and shared light‑hearted remarks before returning to substantive issues.

The summit produced a clear statement of G7 cohesion on the war in Ukraine. Leaders agreed to strengthen military and energy assistance to Kyiv, with particular focus on air‑defence, and the European Union signalled readiness to introduce a new sanctions package against Russia, including a possible re‑imposition of oil sanctions. Italy pledged roughly €30‑35 million for Ukrainian energy infrastructure and said it is prepared to contribute to future defensive missions, pending parliamentary approval.
