Italy's Meloni says US ties must return to normal after Trump dispute
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that bilateral cooperation with the United States must resume its normal course despite recent tensions caused by former President Donald Trump’s remarks. Speaking after last week’s G7 summit, Meloni said she sees no risk to Italy‑US relations and highlighted continued defence cooperation and robust Italian exports despite U.S. tariffs.
US Senator Marco Rubio expressed regret that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s planned visit to Washington was cancelled, noting that several agreements were ready to be signed and would be concluded elsewhere. Rubio said the dispute stemmed from Trump’s accusations that Italy had not supported the U.S. in the Iran war, but he expects the issues to be revisited at the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey.
