Italy's penal system faces heightened public debate

He argued that effective reintegration requires psychological support, dialogue groups, education and employment opportunities, and that punitive measures alone are insufficient.

The Italian Association of Professors of Penal Law issued a statement warning of an escalating public debate on criminal law that is fueling politically driven legislative initiatives. The association cautioned that proposals to broaden the scope of legitimate defence risk violating constitutional safeguards, undermining proportionality and the protection of human life, and could encourage punitive, emotion‑driven policies rather than balanced, rights‑respecting reforms.
