Italy's Pescara and Orvieto Hospitals Perform First Advanced Implants

At the hospital in Pescara, surgeons led by Michele Marullo carried out the first ocular reconstruction in Abruzzo using a new‑generation artificial iris (Carlevale) combined with a scleral‑fixated intra‑ocular lens. The procedure restored both function and appearance for a patient who had suffered severe sclero‑corneal trauma, total lens extrusion and complete loss of the iris.

In Orvieto, the Santa Maria della Stella Hospital performed the first sacral neuromodulation implant in Umbria to treat fecal incontinence. The multidisciplinary surgery team, directed by Dr Andreino Tassi, implanted a device that stimulates sacral nerves, improving continence after conservative therapies failed. The intervention expands the region’s capacity to offer specialist pelvic‑floor treatments.

Both procedures mark pioneering uses of advanced medical devices in their respective Italian regions, offering new therapeutic options for patients with complex conditions.
