Italy's Port Reform Faces Opposition from Tuscany Region

The Italian government’s draft port reform, championed by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, proposes the creation of a national joint‑stock company, “Porti d’Italia,” to act as a central governing body for the country's ports. The plan would shift authority and resources away from existing regional Port System Authorities.

Tuscany’s Regional Council voted against the proposal, with Infrastructure Assessor Marcello Boni warning that the centralisation would weaken the region’s port system, especially in Livorno and Piombino. An association study estimates that the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Authority could lose about €20 million per year and see a 25 % staff reduction, prompting the region to demand a review of the legislation before approval.
