Italy's progressive field pushes primaries to pick premier candidate

Senior Democratic Party figure Goffredo Bettini said a "guarantor" figure to lead the centre‑left coalition is unrealistic and that the premier candidate must be chosen through primaries. He argued that any law forcing parties to indicate a premier on the ballot would be rejected, and that if such a presidential‑style rule passed, the only viable solution would be a primary vote that reflects the electorate’s choice.

Bettini emphasized that without primaries, a party leader cannot credibly endorse another party’s leader, citing Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party and Giuseppe Conte of the Five Star Movement as the main contenders. He warned that current proportional politics and the end of traditional bipolarism make primaries essential to unite the diverse progressive electorate and avoid voter alienation.
