Italy's road code sets rules for safe dog transport in cars

Article 169 of the Italian Codice della Strada mandates that dogs in the vehicle must not obstruct the driver, impair visibility, or become a danger in sudden braking. One dog may travel freely in the cabin if it does not pose a risk; any additional animals must be secured in a cage, container, or separated from the driver by a rear‑seat barrier. Violations attract administrative fines ranging from €87 to €344 and may lead to deduction of licence points.

Recommended safety solutions include a properly sized transport box or kennel for small dogs, a harness that attaches to the seat‑belt, and a permanent rear‑seat divider or net for larger pets. Some insurers, such as Genertel, offer a “4 Zampe a Bordo” add‑on that reimburses veterinary costs incurred in a traffic accident involving the dog, covering surgery, hospitalisation and related treatments.

Drivers are advised to prepare travel documents (microchip, vaccination record, EU pet passport), carry a travel kit (water bowl, snacks, waste bags), and ensure the vehicle is well maintained. Regular stops every two hours and never leaving a dog unattended in a hot car are also emphasized to prevent injury or distress.
