Italy's Salvini signs decree tightening autovelox rules

Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini signed a decree that establishes uniform homologation and calibration requirements for speed‑camera (autovelox) devices across Italy. The new rules introduce a strict technical‑administrative path: each model must be approved by the ministry, receive an identification table, and every individual unit must be calibrated at installation and periodically thereafter. A transitional list of 24 previously approved models is automatically recognised, but they must still display the new identification tag and obtain a compliance certificate.

In the province of Salerno the impact is limited. Devices such as the Velomatic and Telelaser of the Capaccio Paestum municipal police remain authorised, while others have been removed from the approved list. New restrictions also forbid placement of speed cameras on roads with limits below 50 km/h, prompting several municipalities to revise their plans and adopt licence‑plate scanning systems (Targa System) that check insurance, inspection and theft alerts without measuring speed. The decree does not retroactively annul past fines, so legal challenges will continue on a case‑by‑case basis.
