Italy's Sibioc pushes for harmonised laboratory test tariffs amid regional price gaps

The Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Sibioc) released the first national study on the application of the new 2024 laboratory medicine tariff nomenclature. The study, covering 25 key examinations that represent over 60% of laboratory activity, found marked variability in how regional tariff schedules implement the national rates.

Sibioc highlighted that more than 70% of clinical decisions depend on laboratory results and argued that aligning tariffs is essential for equitable financing and consistent patient care. A round‑table involving regional delegations, coordinated by Maurizio D’Amora, underscored divergent organizational models across Italy’s regions. Sabrina Buoro, Sibioc’s president, said the analysis aims to provide objective data to guide future policy and remuneration models without demanding a blanket revision of the system.

The findings are intended to inform the Ministry of Health and regional health authorities as they finalise the valuation of essential levels of assistance (LEA) by the end of September.
