Italy's Speed Camera Fines Challenged Over Hidden Signs and Record Speed

Italian law requires that speed‑camera warning signs be clearly visible to drivers. If a sign is obscured by vegetation, placed behind a curve, or otherwise hidden, courts consider the fine invalid because the purpose of the signage is safety, not revenue.

The most extreme fine on record in Italy was issued in November 2016 on Milan’s Via Palmanova, where a vehicle was detected traveling at 226 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The driver, reportedly in a red Ferrari, faces a penalty of up to €3,382, a deduction of 10 points and a possible licence suspension of up to one year under the December 2024 traffic code.
