Rome's Santa Maria Maggiore hosts annual Miracle of the Snow ceremony

On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome will stage the 43rd edition of the traditional “Miracle of the Snow” celebration. The event recreates the legendary 358 AD snowfall that, according to tradition, marked the site for the basilica’s construction.

The morning programme begins with a Solenne Pontificale presided over by Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, during which white rose petals will fall from the ceiling to simulate snow. The afternoon includes the Secondi Vespri led by Monsignor Luis Manuel Alí Herrera, followed by a second petal cascade. Both liturgies are free and open to the public until capacity is reached.

After the religious rites, the square in front of the basilica is transformed into a stage for music, light shows and an artificial snow display that lasts until midnight. The Carabinieri fanfare and other performers take part, while several streets and bus routes are temporarily closed to accommodate the crowd. The ceremony draws thousands of pilgrims, tourists and locals, highlighting the enduring cultural and religious significance of the medieval legend in contemporary Rome.
