Italy's Supreme Court confirms 8-year sentence for fatal hit-and-run

Italy's Court of Cassation has issued a definitive eight-year prison sentence for Flavio Focassati, the truck driver responsible for the death of 43-year-old Alessia Sbal. The incident occurred on December 4, 2022, on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) in Rome.

In the ruling, judges rejected the defense's claims, stating that Focassati was aware of the collision and deliberately chose to continue driving for approximately 18 kilometers without providing aid or calling emergency services. The court emphasized that the driver perceived the impact and failed to fulfill the legal obligation to stop and assist the victim.

The fatal event followed a prior collision between the two vehicles near the Casalotti junction, which had led to a dispute between the parties before Sbal called emergency services.
