Italy Supreme Court issues definitive rulings in major mafia and criminal trials
Italy's Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione) has issued definitive rulings in several high-profile criminal cases. In the Xydi anti-mafia investigation, sentences have been finalized for several individuals involved in the Canicattì mafia district. Former lawyer Angela Porcello faces a definitive sentence of 9 years, 1 month, and 23 days for mafia association, which will likely result in her return to prison from house arrest. Her former partner, Giancarlo Buggea, received a confirmed 20-year sentence.
In other regional legal developments, the Court of Appeal in Bari reduced sentences for four members of the Strisciuglio clan involved in a kidnapping and assault over a drug debt, with maximum sentences now set at 10 years. In Sant’Agata di Militello, a court in Patti concluded a trial regarding a drug trafficking ring, resulting in five convictions and two acquittals.
Additionally, in Siracusa, a legal proceeding regarding cemetery chapel concessions continues; while the charge of abuse of office was dropped due to legislative changes, defendants still face charges of document falsification and body theft. In Catania, two individuals from Syracuse were arrested for the aggravated extortion of an elderly woman through threats involving her granddaughter.
