Italian court denies parole for jeweler Mario Roggero, upholding 14‑year sentence

Mario Roggero, a jeweler from Grinzane Cavour, was sentenced in 2021 to 14 years and 9 months for killing two armed robbers and wounding a third during an attack on his shop. Subsequent appeals upheld the conviction.

In July 2026 the Turin Office of Surveillance rejected Roggero’s request to suspend or defer his imprisonment, stating that the defence did not demonstrate any urgent or necessary circumstances that would justify a temporary release. The case has been forwarded to the Tribunal of Surveillance for further review.

Prosecutors also reported the seizure of €50,000 that had been transferred from a committee account to a Tunisian bank account linked to Roggero and his wife. Following the verdict, the National Association of Judges (ANM) condemned threats and hateful messages directed at the magistrates handling the case, urging a calmer public discourse and respect for the rule of law.
