Italy's Tav rail project debate resurfaces amid political clashes

The high‑speed rail line known as the Tav has returned to the centre of Italy's political debate. Leaders from across the spectrum are weighing in: right‑wing figure Matteo Salvini is pushing a hard‑line stance, while former prime ministers Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda reaffirm support for the project and criticize what they call a “left‑wing conspiracy”. Former European Commission president Antonio Tajani also denounced the anti‑Tav protesters, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faces accusations of politicising public‑order issues.

The Minister of Infrastructure was not invited to a site visit in Chiomonte, prompting speculation about internal disagreements. Protesters continue to organise rallies, with authorities and opposition parties accusing each other of exploiting the clashes for political gain. Critics highlight the project's soaring costs, environmental impact on the Val di Susa, and the perception that the rail line serves narrow construction lobbies rather than the public interest.
