Italy's Transport Minister Salvini Calls Road Safety Meeting After Youth Fatalities

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced that the government will hold a meeting on road safety this week after a series of recent accidents that claimed the lives of several teenagers in Senago, Forte dei Marmi and elsewhere in Liguria. While he noted that the new traffic code has reduced overall fatalities by more than 100 deaths compared with the previous year, he stressed that “still too many young people are not coming home”.

Salvini said he wants to “go to the homes of these youngsters” by visiting schools and meeting neophyte drivers, and urged mayors and local police to monitor dangerous behaviours such as two‑person electric scooters, riding in the wrong direction and riding without helmets. He added, “Non mi arrendo: questi tre ragazzi per me sono una sconfitta e un dramma”. The minister plans to coordinate local authorities and families to improve awareness and prevent further youth traffic deaths.
