Italy adopts decree to standardise speed‑camera homologation

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has signed a decree that establishes mandatory procedures for the homologation, verification and periodic calibration of speed‑camera (autovelox) devices throughout Italy. The new framework requires a formal ministerial approval for each device, rigorous technical testing and regular checks; devices that fail must be disabled until re‑certified. Placement will be limited to high‑risk accident zones and will need prefectural authorisation.

The decree aims to guarantee the reliability of speed measurements, ensure traceability of technical operations and reinforce the legal solidity of traffic‑violation records, thereby reducing the current flood of road‑user appeals. Associations such as Codacons and Assoutenti note that about 71 % of existing cameras are currently non‑compliant, and the new rules seek to prevent municipalities from using the devices merely as a source of revenue.

By creating a uniform regulatory regime, the government intends to improve road safety while curbing the perception that speed controls are employed primarily to “make cash” from citizens.
