Italy's transport reforms stall as Calabria law is delayed and national contract talks begin

The regional council of Calabria postponed the examination of its public‑transport reform law, moving the discussion to September and reopening the deadline for amendments. The proposal would dissolve the private operator Art‑Cal and create a publicly owned company, AmCal, controlled by the region and local authorities, centralising governance and shifting to public tendering for services.

At the national level, the three main transport unions—FILT CGIL, FIT CISL and UIL Trasporti—have presented their program for the 2027‑2029 collective bargaining round. Their platform expands beyond wages to address artificial‑intelligence integration, digitalisation, safety, work‑life balance, stress prevention, legal and psychological support for staff, and career pathways to attract younger workers amid driver shortages. The negotiations will shape future contracts for Italy’s auto‑ferrotranvieri sector.
