Italy's university museums preserve significant scientific and cultural collections

University museum systems (SMA) in Italy house significant collections of scientific, ethnographic, and archaeological artifacts that often lack the public visibility of state or civic museums. These collections, gathered through research, teaching, and donations, are spread across nearly every Italian university.

In Bologna, Palazzo Poggi serves as a prominent example, housing thousands of artifacts related to the 16th-century naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi. Recent initiatives to mark the 500th anniversary of Aldrovandi's birth included the digitalization of manuscripts and the creation of a digital twin for the exhibition ‘L’altro Rinascimento’.

Other notable institutions include the Museo della Specola in Florence, which is recognized for its valuable anatomical wax collections dating back to the 18th century, and various collections in Pisa.
