Italy's wheat sector declared crisis amid price collapse

Gianni Fabbris, national secretary of Altragricoltura, announced that the Italian state should declare a crisis for the wheat sector. The declaration follows an extraordinary wheat round‑table held at the Ministry of Agriculture, chaired by Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, which produced no immediate measures for cereal growers.

Fabbris cited the Lazio regional administrative court's ruling that annulled the ISMEA decree on average production costs, reinforcing producers' woes. Prices for wheat have fallen to €27‑30 per quintal, while production costs exceed €31, forcing farmers to operate at a loss. The crisis has deepened due to mounting debts to subcontractors, rising fuel costs and banks demanding repayment, with no new subsidies or tariffs introduced at the meeting.
