Itamar Ben-Gvir attends residential building demolition in East Jerusalem

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was present during the demolition of a five-story residential building in the Al-Tur neighborhood of East Jerusalem. The building, which contained ten apartments, housed approximately 70 Palestinian residents, many of whom were women and children. Authorities stated the demolition was carried out because the structure lacked building permits.

Ben-Gvir expressed support for the action, stating, “I love to hear this sound. We are demolishing what is illegal,” and claimed that approximately 1,000 buildings have been demolished over the past 18 months. The Jerusalem Governorate reported that 427 demolition and leveling operations have occurred in the Jerusalem governorate since the start of 2026.

The Arab League condemned the demolition and the resulting displacement of Palestinian families, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law. Hamas characterized Ben-Gvir’s participation as “organized state terror” and an attempt to use the event for election propaganda. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has documented roughly 170 Palestinian structure demolitions in East Jerusalem since the beginning of 2026.
