Brazil reports multiple major criminal convictions

Several significant criminal convictions and legal developments have been reported in Brazil.

In Rio de Janeiro, former military police officer João Luiz da Silva, known as ‘Gago’, was sentenced to over 37 years in prison for the 2018 murder of businessman Marcelo Diotti. The crime was linked to the ‘Escritório do Crime’, an organized crime group led by Adriano da Nóbrega. The jury determined the killing was motivated by revenge and a demonstration of force.

In another Rio de Janeiro case, police officer Carlos Fernando Dias Chaves was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the 2015 deaths of two youths, Thiago Guimarães Dingo and Jorge Lucas Paes. The officer claimed he mistook a hydraulic jack for a weapon during the incident.

In Bahia, city councilman José Adenilton Santos Alves, known as ‘Denilton do Porco’, was sentenced to over 13 years in prison for a homicide committed in 2006. The crime, motivated by jealousy, occurred more than two decades ago. Alves confessed to the shooting but argued he acted in self-defense.
