Item wins Juddmonte International at York, upsetting Ombudsman

In a major upset at York, the 10-1 outsider Item won the Juddmonte International, defeating the world’s top-ranked thoroughbred, Ombudsman. Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Colin Keane, the three-year-old colt secured the victory by a head over Almaqam in the final yards of the 1 5/16-mile race.

Ombudsman, the 5-6 favorite owned by the Godolphin operation, finished fourth after struggling to find a clear run on the rail. This result marks a rare setback for Ombudsman, who had never finished outside the top two in 12 previous races. Constitution River, trained by Aidan O’Brien, finished in third place.

Item, a son of the legendary Frankel, earned a first prize of £850,000. The victory follows a strong run for the colt, who has won five of his six career races.
