ITESHU researchers publish IoT temperature forecasting study

Researchers from the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Huichapan (ITESHU) have published a study in the international scientific journal Computers and Electrical Engineering, edited by Elsevier. The research, titled ‘Data-efficiency and saturation limits in short-horizon temperature forecasting for outdoor IoT sensing systems’, was led by ITESHU Mechatronics Engineering professor José Miguel Hernández Paredes.

The study involved collaboration with the Universidad Politécnica de la Zona Metropolitana de Guadalajara and the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro through the OAC Research Network (Optimization, Automation, and Control). The investigation focuses on outdoor Internet of Things (IoT) systems to predict short-term temperatures and determine the minimum amount of historical data required for reliable forecasting.

A key finding is the identification of specific recent data periods that allow prediction models to remain competitive while reducing the need for storage, processing, and retraining on resource-limited devices. Potential applications include precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, smart buildings, energy management, and environmental alert systems.
