Ithaca anticipates tourism boost from Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey

The Greek island of Ithaca, famously associated with Homer’s Odyssey, is anticipating a potential surge in tourism following the release of Christopher Nolan’s film, ‘Odyssey’. While the film was not shot on the island, local authorities believe the renewed global interest in the Homeric legend will drive travelers to explore the actual historical and mythological locations.

Ithaca Mayor Dionysis Stanitsas noted that while the current tourism season was largely planned before the film’s July release, expectations for a significant impact are focused on the coming year. The island, which has a population of approximately 3,000, has long built its identity around the epic, featuring statues of Odysseus and Homer and various mythological motifs in local commerce.

Beyond tourism, the film has reignited public discourse regarding Homeric epics. Critics and observers note that Nolan’s work serves as an interpretation and modernization of the original text, prompting a renewed interest in the themes of the Bronze Age, Mycenaean culture, and the enduring relevance of ancient storytelling.
