Itty Bitty City Kitties faces backlash over political adoption ban
Itty Bitty City Kitties, a New York-based cat rescue nonprofit, has faced significant backlash after announcing a policy that prohibits supporters of the MAGA movement from adopting its kittens.
Director Samantha Knox defended the decision, stating that the organization’s primary responsibility is ensuring animals go to safe and compassionate homes. Knox argued that a history of celebrating harm toward people or animals is a red flag for animal welfare. The rescue's social media presence has also featured other political statements, including messages supporting Palestine and expressing opposition to ICE.
The policy drew criticism from various sectors, including PETA, which issued a statement noting that “political affiliation is not a reliable measure of whether someone will be a good guardian.” PETA added that shelters and rescues should exist to protect animals rather than serve as “political gatekeepers.”
