ITU advances technical requirements for 6G mobile networks
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is advancing technical elements for the next generation of mobile communications, referred to as IMT-2030 or 6G. During 2026, progress has been made in defining technical requirements to evaluate future radio interface technologies.
This development involves a dual-track approach: technical groups are defining the capabilities of 6G networks, while international efforts continue to determine how the radio spectrum—the invisible highway for wireless communications—will be utilized in the coming decades. While technical requirements are being established, definitive global frequency assignments are primarily managed through World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC) and their associated regulations.
