Iva Mihailova placed under international warrant after fleeing North Macedonia

Iva Mihailova, a 23-year-old suspect in a fatal traffic accident in North Macedonia, has been placed under a central and international warrant after fleeing to Bulgaria. The Kočani Basic Court has ordered a 30-day detention for Mihailova due to her violation of previous court-ordered restrictions, which included the seizure of her Bulgarian and Macedonian passports and a ban on leaving the country.

North Macedonian authorities, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, report that there is no official record of Mihailova exiting the country through legal border crossings, leading to allegations of an illegal border crossing. Conversely, Mihailova and her lawyer maintain that she crossed the border legally using her personal identification documents and that border officials were aware.

The incident has triggered significant political tension. Members of the SDSM have called for the immediate resignation of Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, citing failures in border control and potential political influence in the matter. Meanwhile, North Macedonian officials have expressed expectations that Bulgaria, as an EU and NATO member, will cooperate by extraditing Mihailova to face justice. Bulgarian officials have confirmed Mihailova is receiving medical treatment at Pirogov Hospital in Sofia and stated they will investigate the circumstances of her border crossing.
