Ivace+i Innovación promotes new electric vehicle battery recycling technology
The Generalitat Valenciana, through Ivace+i Innovación, is promoting a new direct recycling technology designed to manufacture new electric vehicle batteries from used ones. This initiative, involving the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica (ITC) and the Universitat Jaume I (UJI), focuses on recovering active cathode material, which is a primary component of lithium-ion batteries.
The project aims to address the environmental and technological challenges of the expanding electric mobility sector by treating end-of-life batteries as a source of strategic raw materials rather than waste. By recovering these materials, the process seeks to reduce energy consumption, decrease reliance on mining, and minimize the environmental impact associated with the extraction and transport of new resources.
This technological advancement supports a circular economy model by enabling the reintegration of recovered materials into the manufacturing of new battery cells, aligning regional industrial policy with sustainability and energy efficiency goals.
